Hey so I found a car. I'm now the proud owner of a Geo Prizm (91). Its lovely! Has low miles for its age, good service records and is in great shape. It drives like a dream too. Best of all, it was CHEAP.

What's cool about this car is its a Toyota Corolla, made by Toyota for GM so GM could brand it as theirs. Yet this car was half the price of Corollas its same age.

I feel like I really lucked out. I keep wondering if something dramatic will fall off, but I don't think it will. The previous owner seemed pretty honest -- she was graduating Stanford Medical and moving across country to start an internship at Penn. I talked her down from 1700 to 1100. Really feels like a steal.

Next up is getting the right stickers for it. That's on order. And deadhead friends of mine across the country are allegedly sending me stickers :)

I keep coming up with a list of the "best thing about this car is.." but truly, the BEST thing about this car is the working tape deck (and nice pioneer speakers.) You see, I have several hundred hours of analog tapes I haven't listened to in about 5 years and I have this 2 hour a day commute thing. Its a match made in heaven, I'm telling ya.

So far I've lost myself in Neil Young (he's a god, you know...), Van the Man Morrison and my favorite Dead show ever, 6/24/83. I only have the second set and its on cheesy cheap cassette, but its such an amazing set. And yes, I was there. Myself and a friend hitched to Madison WI from St. Paul MN to see the show. It was my first open floor general admission Dead show and the first time the music played me. It was also the first time I heard the song "Althea." First Shakedown too, I think, but I don't have the first set where it was played.

I babble. But each of these tapes is kinda sending me off on a reverie about where I got it, or what the songs mean to me. And sometimes there are surprises. Yesterday I grabbed what I thought was a Little Feat tape, and it turned out to be this sick killer tape of a show in a little bar somewhere... a soundboard tape of Buddy Guy and Stevie Ray Vaughn just ripping it up. Some random live Phish was stuck on it as filler. I don't have a clue where I got this show, but it rips.

Today I'll finish off the Hothouse Flowers show from '93 -- a wonderful show at the Great American Music Hall. After that.. who knows.

Life doesn't suck right now.

Looking looking looking. I hate this process. There's too much pressure for me to find a car yesterday. And I'm spending far too much time in the company of used car salesmen.

Today, just for fun, the front tire on the rental car was flat.. So instead of eating dinner and taking a break at work, I got a hold of the rental company and got car service to fix the tire. They put on one of those cheesy temp tires, which means that instead of dealin with just the appts I have tomorrow to look at cars, I get to wrassle with the car rental company and hope they can give me another car.

I'm learnin something valuable out of all of this and I'll share it with you, gentle readers. Are you ready? here it is:

"Sometimes the light at the end of the tunnel is just the oncoming train"

Its raining its pouring the old man is snoring....

My car died. I don't mean the "whoops get it into the shop" kind of death. No, I mean the "front end is falling off and it would cost more to fix it than its worth" sort of mortality.

This is not a good time for this. I just spent my "extra" cash on lil Gretchen's surgery. There's no public transit to my job that runs at the time I need to get there and car rentals are fugging expensive. I truly need the Universe to drop a cheap reliable car in my lap.

Ok? Universe... you listening? Hello... ?

sigh.
