Long long days. Last night, I left work late after 2 hours of overtime. Exhausted but glad to be done, I headed north on 85. ACK. About half way to hiway 17, which takes me over the coastal mountains to the beach town I live in, the freeway was closed. For construction. So, along with the other rats in the maze, I headed off the freeway. I saw a detour sign. "Woo hoo," thought I. "Lets follow this."

I followed the signs.. they led to a train station. Dead end. I tried to backtrack but no luck. Then I saw the housing development sign. "Tanglewood." I knew I was really lost.

I drove around and around... eventually found my way to the freeway after about 45 minutes of hapless wandering in circles. Oy. Avoid the tanglewood.

Sucks to be me.

It a good motto. Well, an apt one.

My tooth has gone south again. Fugging hurts and has hurt for 3 days now. So I broke down and called 1-800-Dentist. I don't have insurance, but wtf am I going to do?

So I got an appointment to see a guy this afternoon. I took half the day off from work-- unpaid because they are dragging their feet about bringing in anyone as employee in the first quarter. (that's part of the "sucks to be me" philosophy) $100 to spend 5 minutes with him after he reviewed an xray. $3000 estimate for root canal (he actually use a different softer sounding word which cracked me up.) and crowns. He'll extract for $400.

Fuck.

So I got an antibiotic script from the guy. Clindamycin. $116 !!!!!!!

Someone please tell me what the working poor do when their teeth are messed up? The antibiotics are going to buy me some time, but that's about it. I'm going to have to pick up some SAT students to cover these costs as it is.

I can't keep going like this.

The wait is over.

Two years ago, I heard about the grant Norbert Wu got from the NSF to make a documentary about Antarctica. Now, finally, its going to air. On January 12th, PBS's Nature series will air "Diving Under Antarctic Ice." With the stills I've seen of Mr. Wu's work down there, I highly recommend it. Nature has their own website for it, but I recommend the site created by Peter Brueggeman at Scripps. Be sure to check out the Gallery.
